Rest is a ladle with a stub that allows for both the ladle head and counter to be clean in between servings without a saucer, unlike traditional ladles which lie on the head. The stub also provides a sturdy grip at the midpoint, which aids in scraping and other refined motions.
Rest was modeled in Blender and assembled using stack laminated, laser-cut pieces. It was the first time I have used this process, and because of the success of this project I intend to use this again.
The original task that led to Rest was to design a form that fit into the negative space of the hand. Initial developments were made in clay, with three refined forms: a stack-laminated form, a tooling foam form, and a form edited to be more approachable in its design language, eventually being made. It was the emphasized feet of the latter form that served as the inspiration to the final ladle.
