"In teams of three, design a novel large-scale system, space, or object for play."
Designed in collaboration with Tori Albrecht and Mary Kate Ganley
Weirbo is an envisioned play structure emulating a giant beast emerging from as bed of sand. Participants can climb over, walk around, have a seat on, or even take a nap on Weirbo. (He looks threatening, but he doesn't mind!) This project was created in two weeks as part of the Big Play Design Charette for VTID Industrial Design Lab II.
Developing Weirbo was at first an arduous creative task. Each of us generated a variety of contested ideas throughout the design process before ultimately settling on this concept. I also significantly refined a few of my existing skills, namely creating graphics in Procreate and 3D modeling in Blender, even encouraging one of my teammates to learn the latter. Overall, I contributed to the following aspects of this project:
>Prototyping and concept sketching
>Modeling Weirbo's head and foot in Blender
>Side and top view site plans (as seen on poster)
>Animation
The development of Weirbo was an exercise of profuse creative exploration and acceptance of change. For most of the development of this project, a set of multiple Weirbos were conceived. While we eventually let go of this concept due to not having a consistent vision on as to how the various elements were to interact, this ideation process proved valuable in creating a significantly more streamlined final product.
